HYMAG’IN develops an industrial process for converting ferrous waste and by-products into a functional material, magnetite.
Produced in sizes smaller than a micrometer, this iron oxide has outstanding physicochemical properties that make it a highly valuable material for a wide range of applications, among which wastewater treatment and soil remediation.
By providing a process based on waste and by-products upcycling, HYMAG’IN promotes circular economy and makes magnetite available on a large scale.
Our process is based on six years of laboratory research.
& SOIL REMEDIATION
HYMAG’IN proposes magnetite to wastewater treatment and soil remediation operators as a novel alternative solution. Magnetite offers efficient decontamination of heavy metals (Cr, As, Se, Pb, etc.) and organic micro-pollutants (pesticides, dyes, chlorinated compounds), by combining filtration and redox degradation.
While scrap is largely recovered by steelmakers via scrap metal dealers, fine particles in the form of iron-rich dust and sludge are difficult to recover.
The upcycling of these residues represents a major challenge for three reasons:
Due to its numerous properties, our magnetite is able to address alternative markets listed below:
Electromagnetic shielding. Magnetite, as a ferrite, is a material known for its properties of absorption of electromagnetic waves such as radar, wifi, microwaves...
Magnetic functionalization. By introducing magnetites into a polymer-type matrix, an object can become magnetic-field sensitive.
Pigmentation. Magnetite is widely marketed as a black pigment. Colorimetry studies have made it possible to quantify the black intensity of our materials!
Catalysis. Magnetite may accelerate some chemical reactions, such as in the Haber process for the production of ammonia from nitrogen.
Source of iron. Natural micrometric-sized magnetite is a widely used iron ore.
